I would state that most of the suffering we choose for ourselves. Even the types of suffering we wouldn't assume.

When it comes to dying, we all die. I found that in many cases (not all) often the suffering from past away loved ones, has much to do with inner guilt of knowing that you (perhaps) didn't spend more quality time together, or didn't expose yourself enough towards that person in a certain way.

I know this might sound cruel. But my perspective on this shifted recently, after reading the famous book "Man in search for meaning" by Victor Frankl.

In this book you'll find that humans have an internal clock driven by the mind, which made prisoners predict their death, set by the mind with remarkable accuracy.

In a way this lines out how we in many ways, choose or don't choose to suffer.

Besides from Victor's book, when we all dare to look deeply into our past lives, you'll find more clues..

Respect!

Thanks for these inspiring advices you brought in that post here, Thomas!
