Visited the Louvre Abu Dhabi just recently. It's a special (futuristic architecture).
Not something you would expect for a musea, but okay.
You can't compare this one with the Louvre in Paris. I had a pleasant noon out, but in about 2-3 hours you've seen everything at the Louvre Abu Dhabi, it doesn't hold as much art and artifacts as the Paris one by far (but it's not that expensive), whereas the one in Paris I could spent a week in there by myself.
They are uncomparable.
Nevertheless, when looking at it in perspective due to the extreme weather conditions, they try to do their best to make things attractive.
Presently I'm looking at the building. As I write, from the opposite birth.
UAE had much difficulties to make the region attractive and they're trying to impress by architecture, low taxation solutions, and more things.
I notice serious changes since 7 years ago, Dubai became a huge city (agreed, with much nearly empty buildings). Dubai was the touristic spot to be, however I notice that a shift is happening. From experience I found that Abu Dhabi has become more open to Western culture too since 7 years back.
I see a similar cycle occuring when Saudi Arabia rapidly innovates with their investments in projects such as NEOM (Although I think this one is a very strange idea..) Still it's somewhat impressive.
Industrial revolution an innovation will shift regilious emphasis. As this trend has set in Dubai while constructing the Palm Islands, and rapid expansion of all infrastructure.
Environments shape people and people from different regions influence eachother, but it needs to be given time. In the end I think this will evolve in something great but still sterile..
I understand your skeptical view throughout this post well. But something I have to brutally admit over the last two decade is that this sterility, serenity, circadian weather balance, and calmth over here has a very positive effect on your mind.
There exist more positive elements over here in this environment than we ought to think.
Extreme weather conditions contribute to this atmosphere.
As for the architectures, you might look into those they are currently constructing like the national musea of Zayed. It's not finished yet, but it looks amazing.
Perhaps this Louvre here in Abu Dhabi wasn't meant to overshine...
Thanks for your great article.
For me, working (and living) in the UAE often over the last decade has transformed my skeptical mind.
